Adding a Closet to an Existing Room
Sometimes the best upgrades aren’t about adding space — they’re about using space better.
We recently worked with a homeowner who wanted to add a closet to an existing room. The room itself had enough square footage, but no built-in storage, which made it less functional day to day.
Instead of forcing furniture into the space, we built the closet directly into the layout.
Using the space behind the wall
In this case, we didn’t just frame a closet inside the room and make it smaller. We actually opened up the wall and extended the closet into the adjacent space behind it.
This allowed us to create a functional closet without sacrificing as much usable space in the main room.
Any time you’re working through an existing wall like this, it’s important to account for what’s inside — framing, electrical, and overall layout — before cutting anything open.
Framing the new closet structure
Once the wall was opened, we framed out the new closet structure to define the space. This includes building out the sides, top, and opening so everything is square, solid, and ready for finishing.
We also added cubbies at the top of the closet to give the homeowner extra storage for items that don’t need to be accessed every day.
Small additions like that make a big difference in how useful the space becomes.
Adding electrical for functionality
A closet without lighting isn’t very practical, so we ran electrical into the new space and installed a light inside the closet.
This is one of those details that’s easy to overlook during planning, but it makes the finished result feel complete and functional instead of like an afterthought.
Drywall and finishing to match the room
After framing and electrical, we installed drywall and finished the surfaces so the closet blended into the existing room.
The goal is for it to look like it was always part of the home, not something that was added later. Clean lines, smooth transitions, and matched finishes are what make that happen.
A functional upgrade that adds value
Adding a closet can completely change how a room is used. It adds storage, improves organization, and can even increase the overall appeal of the space.
It’s a great example of how a thoughtful layout change can make a room more functional without needing a full remodel.
